Gardening and watering the children :)

We really wanted to start a garden here at our chateau (tongue in cheek)...but figured it best to start small this year and work our way into it. I would be devastated if we toiled long and hard in the soil just to have our efforts be in vain (aka - dead garden). so, we decided to go with the "contained" garden --and collectively decided tomatoes were the way to go!
(mainly because my boys will literally eat a whole tomato in one sitting...and then ask for seconds, they love 'em! so why not grow a hurst family favorite?)
*
we've had our plants for a while now and I'm proud to announce: they are GROWING and...we've got our FIRST tomato!!!!

Our "container" tomato plants

Our first tomato - hoo-rah!

so in celebration...i watered the boys! (not really, we've know about the tomato for a few days now, I just thought i'd add this pic of my wild munchkins while they frolicked in the sprinkler earlier today) I just love summer time!

anyway, i'm soooo excited about our tomatoes!!!! and can't wait to share our first feast together with some good ol' homegrown tomaters!
ps i'm not really sure why i already have a tomato? my plants certainly aren't mature yet soooo...i really hope it's not a dud!!! is it easy to tell i'm totally new at this??? :)

You should look up square foot gardening, there's a book & website by Mel Bartholomew. I heard about it at a class and it's so intriguing, and sounds like a great idea w/ kids and/or poor growing conditions.

We do the square foot gardening as mentioned above. Love it.

I think doing just a little your first year is great. Last year was our first year with our own little garden and we are doing much more this year. It was nice to not have as much pressure and to get our feet wet. I can't keep house plants alive, but I can keep my veggies alive!

Tomatoes are the best though. I hope yours grow great for you. Keep us posted!

p.s. cute boys, as always!

Yay for gardens! I want to grow one too when we move into a place that has some kind of yard :0) I love the picture of the tomato! Makes all the work worth it. And that's great that your boys eat em up!

Yeah for maters! I can't help you in the garden dept. my little tomato plants are only like four inches tall, it will be awhile before we see anything, if they make it, yours look terrific.

The boys look so cute playing in the water, sprinklers are the best.

We are growing a small garden too this year. When I saw your baby tomato, I was thinking how lucky. I keep waiting and we still have nothing. There's nothing like fresh vegetables! Good luck and keep us posted. :)

How fun! We've always wanted to do the garden thing, but never have. I hesitate b/c, frankly, I kill things...maybe I'll attempt after we make the move to Kansas City. You'll have to keep us non-green thumbs updated.
