a gnarly lip split

So, for those of you who are wondering...this is one of the perks (serious sarcasm here) to raising my boys ---FOUR hours in an emergency room waiting to get stitched up from one ugly gash to the lower lip and chin. Nice.
Leif and Sam were playing outside on the driveway and got into a tiff...chasing ensued, and Sam ended up shoving Leif face first into the t-ball base that he was clutching in his hands...that thing came right up and caught his lower lip and chin. The wound was laying open and bleeding everywhere. At first, I thought a piece of his lip was missing, that's how awful it looked. Once I pieced it back together and realized it was all still there (no going out and searching the driveway for a piece of lip...hoping I beat the dog to it) I called Jared and loaded the kids up in the car. We picked Jared up on the way to the emergency room.
The nurses fell in love with my little man (I understand completely) and took great care of him, letting him watch cartoons and entertaining him for four hours (while I wrestled an overtired baby and a hyped up four year old out in the waiting room) until the doctor was able to get free and stitch him up. Leif does NOT like being restrained, so you can imagine his utter disdain upon being swaddled while the doc worked on him. it took four people including his father to keep him under control. He's quite the little fighter. He would scream "I'm done guys...let me up guys, I'm done!!!" it was heart wrenching. Jared had to stay in there with him because I would have just wanted to punch everyone and fall apart myself...anyway.
I wish I would have gotten a picture of the actual wound, but I was in survival mode so the thought didn't cross my mind. But I did have the camera in my diaper bag and these are the pics of him all stitched up and us waiting for the release papers and prescription...

Leif- four hours and ten stitches later, juice box in hand and puffy eyed from the trauma
(they gave him a sweet little teddy bear at the end)

a very tired sam... um, need i say more?

and the cranky baby...

the boys the very next day

we couldn't wipe or wash the wound for 24hrs, so this pic is pretty yucky...

poor guy.

ps i was concerned with the scarring, but the doc assured me that Leif couldn't have been "luckier" with the type of wound it was (he explained in further detail, regarding the muscle and the shape of the wound, but i won't elaborate)...so everything should be healed and virtually unnoticeable in 3 to 6 weeks...phew!!!

oooh...I hated reading about this. This is one of my fears. It's just a matter of time, isn't it?

Poor baby and poor mama! I know what that feels like--and I have girls (Part of the "joys" of being a mommy). You probably need a little de-stress time after all that. I know I could barely breathe reading that, and it wasn't even my child. So glad that doctor was able to fix it up with no scarring. What a blessing.

Just remember-chicks dig scars...but in this case maybe just stitches! 10 stitches, whew! With 3 crazy beasties, I'm always thankful I haven't had to rush to the ER. Jos, isn't too wild with his tricks and ideas-but Gav always seems to bite off more than he can chew in the ability arena. One fight did gash Gav's eyebrow open, but a butterfly bandaide took care of that. Here's to you, tough momma, with your tough and tumble little men!

I better prep up after reading that. I would be freaking out first of from the huge gash and second because I would have to make a trip to the ER - I really dislike(hate) hospitals. I am glad everything turned out fine.
